Is it Time You Started Using Turmeric Whitening Toothpaste?

The Shocking Truth Even About Those “Natural” Toothpastes

You really don’t have to be a dentist to tell that the standard toothpaste we begin and end our days with is mostly just chemicals. And, you can see how the advertisements have conditioned us – this one is fighting germs longer, this one tastes better, this one kills bad breath, this one’s better to get off plaque, this one here makes your teeth whiter. It all sounds well and good until you start examining ingredients and what they do to your body– even in “natural” toothpaste. This is why I found it important to know how to make turmeric powder natural whitening toothpaste? After all, if you know ingredients like turmeric powder and coconut oil can be very good for you, and they can do the same or even a better job, why would you use anything else?

But some people may ask:  with MILLIONS and millions of Americans daily using fluoridated concoctions on their teeth for SO many years, could the stuff really be bad for you? It’s not like our country has any real health problems, right (ahemmm….)?

Turmeric toothpaste headache

Having a chronic illness myself, I really had to look at the facts. What really goes into toothpaste, and if it’s bad, how do you make your own safe toothpaste? Do you ask why I made the change? What did I find out about the chemically loaded “protectors of our teeth”?

Most toothpaste, for certain, have these basic chemicals. So, I am going to name these for you and also tell you the side effects:

  1. Fluoride:

This harmless-sounding chemical is nothing less than slow poison. In fact, the instruction on the carton (and tube) asks you to call poison control in case of overdose (ie ingesting any more than a tiny pearl-sized drop!).

Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that of all the cases admitted for fluoride poisoning (enamel fluorosis), one-third cases are those of children aged 6-19 years?

Here is why – it is a neurotoxin. And what does a neurotoxin do? Sabotages your IQ forever, damages your thyroid, fosters many metabolic diseases, and causes bone cancer. Sounds pretty healthy, eh?

  1. Sweeteners:

So, when was the last time you tasted a bitter toothpaste? Hard to think of it? The fact is that every toothpaste has loads of sweeteners like aspartame. Of course, the notorious aspartame has become the great Morpher, having had its name changed several times (like high fructose corn syrup) so consumers don’t know they are ingesting something their body can’t metabolize. In short, one of its byproducts, methanol, poisons the body leading to headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory problems, numbness, and shooting pains in the arms and legs, behavioral issues, and even neuritis. The good news is that for some natural toothpaste, xylitol, a few studies suggest, may be beneficial for oral health, but even that has been debated. Needless to say, no sweetener benefits oral health, anyway.

  1. Surfactants:

Odds are that a toothpaste that does not make any foam shall be declared useless by us. But, do we know what makes that foam? It’s sodium lauryl sulfate – a chemical that may cause cancer as well as mouth ulcers. In addition to that, there are the colors and dyes that accompany it.

No, not exactly natural.

A lot people may think at this point that I’m just saying to stop using toothpaste and to let your teeth rot out. But it’s funny what you learn when you pay attention in school. Did you know there are certain societies that have never had tooth decay?

If you study the ancient ayurvedic wisdom about health and prevention, I think you’ll understand why. And there’s no better example of the power of this ancient medicine for our modern problems the turmeric whitening toothpaste recipe we’ve discovered. Heck, you can even make it at home without even having to go to the supermarket, if you have the right ingredients. I found all things right there in my kitchen, and trust me when I say that it’s something a lot cheaper than those tubes of poison, and especially chemotherapy!

Here is what you will need:

(Just be sure that your turmeric source is safe)

  • PLUS food-grade peppermint (or cinnamon) essential oil:  About 5 drops.
  • 1 Packet of Stevia

So How Do You Make Your DYI Turmeric Powder Toothpaste at Home?

  • Simply mix all the ingredients together to make a thick paste that can be easily rubbed onto your teeth.
  • Now, evenly and gently apply the paste to your teeth.
  • Gently put it on your teeth for about 20 seconds and then brush with your regular toothbrush (yes it will get yellow, so you can also use a separate toothbrush) about 3 to 5 minutes, just long enough to let the two cleansing agents exercise their anti-bacterial, whitening action.
  • Then simply spit it out (preferably into a lined trash bin since coconut oil can harden) and rinse with warm water.
  • If you do this for 10-14 days there’s no WAY you won’t see a visible difference. I saw a MAJOR difference within just one treatment, which is NOT what happens when I try hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

Of course, the best part of all is that there are no side-effects. You just have to be careful that, ironically, turmeric powder can stain your clothes and linens, so where an old shirt and use an old towel to clean up.

Important Tips:

  • Since the inherent taste of turmeric is bitter and smell strong, do not forget to add peppermint oil.
  • If you do not like peppermint, you can also go for any good quality cinnamon essential oil, or even organic vanilla extract, like I did.
  • Make sure that you are ready for a little mess since the paste is bound to turn to liquid with the warmth of your mouth.
  • Your teeth temporarily will turn a little yellow, but it comes off easily at the end.
  • If you are using your fingers for the application, they are going to get stained too, especially the nails. Using a cotton swab cleans this up fairly easily, but better to wear latex gloves if you can.
  • The lips may also get stained but nothing a little soap and water won’t get rid of
  • The sink may also get temporarily stained, but just clean it as normal.
  • Once a day is pretty much you should ever do this. So, keep it at that. Most would recommend once every week or two weeks.

But some may wonder, does such a plain-sounding homemade toothpaste actually work?

Absolutely. Those from all over the planet catching onto this trend are not only seeing a difference in the appearance of my teeth but also in their breath and gum problems as well.

It’s really quite simple.

You are taking the best properties of coconut oil (good for teeth) and turmeric (good for teeth AND brightening) and you are putting them into one.

But there is one major mental obstacle a lot of people just can’t get over. How can a yellow-colored spice whiten your teeth? And how can it have this amazing cleansing action in the light of the fact that turmeric stains are one among the hardest to remove?

As you’ve seen from the video and pictures I’ve provided, seeing is believing.

One thing that you might need to have though, is a little patience, as well as a little wisdom about your diet in general. It is not in each case that one may notice a huge difference right after the first application. While some may, for some it may take a few days to show the most visible results. But in the end, mind you, you will certainly be impressed. And it won’t have the painful, expensive, or harmful after-effects that a cosmetic procedure would have on your teeth or body.

That’s right. Don’t think that just toothpastes can do harm to you and your teeth. Dental procedures that work to whiten your teeth could be as hazardous as your toothpaste. Those whitening strips that you pop in just before you had to your date, could actually be causing you cancer as evidenced by the fact they don’t want you to use them more than twice a year. So, if you have been using those for a while now, you shouldn’t be wondering why toothaches and thinned teeth are now becoming the hallmarks of your mouth.

Whitening strips contain carbamide peroxide, the active ingredient in bleaches. Continued use of this agent is likely to cause your gums to get irritated and recede, apart from making your teeth brittle, translucent, and chalky at the edges. This is the same agent in general that may be used in dental treatments meant to whiten and brighten your teeth. These treatments, in the long run, will only turn your teeth back to the pale color you went to your dentist for in the first place. These “harmless” pieces of paper, based on a few studies, could also cause genotoxic effects, though the jury is still out on the final decision. But is it worth the risk?

Surprisingly, You Can Whiten Your Teeth Fast with Turmeric Powder

Did you know that turmeric has been hailed for ages as a spice that holds the secret of youth? Not only is it beneficial for oral health, but also for digestion and bone health. It also works as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic agent that can even treat certain cancers. It is particularly useful with gingival inflamed gums. So, along with whitening your teeth, it also repairs your gums, maximizing gum health, and also mitigating inflammation.

Turmeric toothpaste, simply put, is an amalgam of science and experience. When recipes have been passed down for thousands of years, the wise person can recognize the principle of that proven method and use it for the greater good. That is Ayurveda.

Some Final Notes for Doubters

If you think that turmeric hacks for teeth whitening don’t work, you really need to try it for yourself before you can come to a conclusion. Here are some miraculous things that turmeric and do for your oral health.

Being a part of the ginger family, it has a score of medicinal values. Its main compound that is responsible for its yellow color and its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties is known as curcumin. For oral health, it has a number of properties that can do wonders for oral health.

Turmeric and Gingivitis and Plaque

This condition of gums is a very common one. The clearest symptoms are swelling and irritation caused due to mild inflammation.

Plaque, on the other hand, is a condition wherein a pale film forms on the teeth or on any other mucous surface of the mouth.

People usually opt for dental treatments and mouthwashes to get rid of these conditions. But studies suggest that turmeric, as used topically, like in homemade toothpaste, or in cosmetic turmeric hacks, turns out to be as effective as standard treatment-chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash but with fewer side effects.

Turmeric and Periodontitis

Periodontitis is one of the biggest reasons behind the loosening and loss of teeth. It occurs due to inflammation in the tissues that support the gums. The main reason behind it is the accumulation of bacteria at the gum line.

Dentists usually recommend procedures like scaling or root planing (smoothening of root surface). Both these treatments are invasive and not without long term side effects. Plus, you will spend some time on antibiotics, which can destroy the good bacteria of your gut, and harm your future autoimmune defense.

But with its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can bring down a massive amount of inflammation within a few days of use. The fact that it is also antioxidant and antibacterial in nature explains a lot about its action on the inflamed and infected gums. While it chases away the infection, it also mitigates inflammation effectively, and its analgesic effects soothe the pain.

Turmeric and Fluoride Damage Resistance

One great favor that you do yourself when you whiten your teeth easy and fast with turmeric powder toothpaste is that you save yourself from a ton of fluoride that could be working as a slow poison. As I already told you, fluoride is a major cause behind the slow damage of the brain. Regular use of turmeric also helps you repair the damage that has already been done, and also combat the future exposure that you might run into from incidental contact with fluoridated drinking water, food cooked in non-stick cookware, water contaminated with antibiotics and chemicals, and more.

Even turmeric water has great benefits:

So the question really isn’t if you should use turmeric on your teeth. It’s how else you should incorporate it into your health and beauty regime to keep yourself feeling and looking great! MD
