7 Ways to Use Turmeric Powder to Strengthen Your Health & Beautify Your Body

Turmeric is one of those precious spices that western cuisine has always underused. This brightly-hued spice is the heart and soul of the Indian cuisine as well as the authentic home remedies for skin and health care. It is, indeed, the East that knows how to best use turmeric powder.

Turmeric is the reason behind the right color of the luscious Indian curries and the flavorful Mughlai dishes, and for good reason. Not only does it make the food appealing to the eye and the tongue, but it also offers immense health benefits when added to certain types of food. To top it all, turmeric powder is as good when applied topically as when ingested.

Here are 7 ways in which you can use the turmeric powder:

1. Cooking

Turmeric is native to Asia, especially India, and makes for a staple spice in every Indian kitchen. The rich curries, the flavorful gravies and practically every main course dish in India have turmeric added to it while cooking.

If you are not a fan of curries and gravies, here is how you can use turmeric powder in your everyday food:

  • Make soothing tea by simmering milk with a pinch of turmeric and honey to taste.
  • You can also add a quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric powder to tofu or scrambled eggs. Adding it to frittatas while cooking isn’t a bad idea either.
  • You can also roast vegetables with two pinches of turmeric. It works very well with root vegetables like potatoes and colocasia (aka “Elephant Ears”). You can even try it with cauliflower which absorbs it really well.
  • You can also add it to plain, mundane rice along with green vegetables to make a great pilaf.
  • Try to saute leafy greens like kale, cabbage, collards and other greens with a pinch of turmeric powder.
  • You can also use it in your soups, whether chicken or vegetable to give it an even more comforting taste.
  • Add ½ teaspoon of it to a cup of warm milk and have it before bed. It not only brings down inflammation of all sorts, including that of joints but also works as an analgesic.
  • Taking turmeric powder with black pepper increases its absorbability by the body. Simply mix ⅓ cup of honey with 2 ½ spoons of turmeric powder and let it in a jar for 2 weeks. In a cup of hot water, add 1 teaspoon of this mixture and ½ teaspoon of black pepper. Also, add a bit of lemon juice and have it while still warm for relief from pains of arthritis.

Here are some great benefits that adding turmeric to your food will offer

  • Reduce symptoms of chronic diseases that are caused due to free radicals in the body
  • Promotion of heart health in those with heart issues through the removal of oxidized cholesterol from the body
  • Lowering oxidative stress, thus keeping the heart-healthy
  • Acting as anti-aging agent by combating the free radicals
  • Preventing and impeding the growth of tumors, cancer and cell mutation.

One of the best uses of turmeric powder is for promoting heart health. The fact that curcuma longa contains curcumin has a lot to do with the health of the heart. Curcumin, as we have discussed already, possesses antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic properties.

  • Curcumin helps reduce plaque buildup as well as prevent formation of clots. It thus prevents numerous cardiovascular diseases which are caused by plaque buildup, which fosters blood clots in arteries. Turmeric relaxes the blood vessels and minimizes the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
  • Turmeric also lowers bad cholesterol in the arteries. Curcumin has the power to encourage the production of mRNA by the liver so as to promote the manufacturing of good cholesterol.
  • Turmeric’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory component, curcumin fights inflammation causing enzymes and free radicals in the body to cut the bad cholesterol and increase the immunity.

  • It also regulates glucose levels and reduces complications in diabetes

Yes, regular intake of turmeric can also regulate your glucose and insulin levels. Curcumin has the power to keep the pancreas in a good shape. Since the pancreas are responsible for regulating the production of insulin in the body, a healthy pancreas means regulated insulin and thus correct glucose levels. Turmeric thus helps prevent insulin resistance in the body. It also works on triglycerides and blood sugars to lower them if high, thus impeding the attack of diabetes or altogether preventing type 1 diabetes.

2. Compacts and Pastes

Turmeric powder can be preserved in combination with certain other oils and herbs and used as a remedy for a lot of conditions including arthritis and sore muscles:

    • You can also mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder and some coconut oil to make a grainy paste. Applying this paste on affected joints and wrapping them with a bandage will also help relieve arthritis pain and stiffness.
    • Turmeric also works very well on wounds and gashes. Even the worst cuts, sores and wounds can be healed with turmeric powder. Take a tablespoon of mustard oil and mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in it. Heat in on flame till the mixture gives off foam and the turmeric becomes dark orange, let it cool and apply warm to the wound for a couple of days. It will heal like a miracle.
    • The grainy coconut-turmeric paste that we just talked of, can also work very well for sore muscles and bruises. Athletes can very well make good use of

3. DIY Turmeric Capsules

If you do not like the taste of turmeric but do feel the need to add it as a supplement, there is an easy alternative for you – turmeric pills/capsules. Though you can get OTC turmeric pill and capsules, it is fairly easy to make the same at home. The advantage of DIY here is that you know what is going inside the pill since spices bought from local spice stores are usually purer than those at the grocery stores.

It is very easy to make turmeric capsules at home:

  • You will need to invest in a capsule filling machine and empty gelatin/vegetarian capsule shells. All these things are easily available online for very low prices. 00 may be a good size for packing ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder.
  • Use a wide container and a scoop for ease of access. Work on a kitchen slab or a tabletop and keep clean rags handy for wiping off hands.
  • 1 level teaspoon of turmeric can make 4 of 00 capsules.

A lot of people prefer taking turmeric capsules after or with meals. If your meal has cracked black pepper and fat in it, it increases the bioavailability of curcumin in the body.

Curcumin, in fact, has more advantages than we think it has. Here are some.

  • It fights inflammation so is great for people with arthritis:

Inflammation is one big cause of so many maladies that just by bringing it down, you can achieve a fuller health. It is actually the reason behind painful diseases like asthma, bronchitis, psoriasis and arthritis.

Tackling arthritis means tackling inflammation, to a large extent. Turmeric does exactly this – fight inflammation with its anti-inflammatory agents present in curcumin. It inhibits the action of the two inflammation-causing enzymes called COX and LOX. This action is much more effective than regular medications offer. One major side-effect of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) is gastric erosion, which is not a risk when you use turmeric for arthritis.

  • Its components not only strengthen the body but also combat cancer

Turmeric is one spice that is replete with antioxidants. Antioxidants are those compounds in nature that combat the free radicals in the body and help us stay healthy and robust. The science that lies behind it is that antioxidants fortify your immunity, thus letting you fight diseases, even as deadly as cancer.

Studies reveal, that turmeric, to our good fortune, has the ability to impede and even halt the growth of cancer cells. Its main compound, curcumin, can alter the instructions of the DNA to cancer cells, thus causing cancer cells to die. Research also reveals that regulated intake of curcumin can prevent cancers of lung, stomach, colon, liver, and breast primarily based on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities which interfere with the cellular signals received by the cancer cells.

  • Boosts cognitive abilities

Brain health or improvement of cognitive abilities is one of the added advantages of turmeric. You will be astounded to know that according to research, India runs a 25% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s than the US does simply because turmeric is a staple spice in Indian diets.

Curcumin, since it is responsible for preventing the buildup of amyloid plaques (those associated with Alzheimers’) in brain arteries as well, helps improve brain function and keeps the dreaded disease away. The research was conducted on rats and the results were remarkable.

4. DIY Dye

Yes, turmeric powder can give you vibrant yellow hues for your fabrics. Simply combine 4 litres of water and 4 heaped spoons of plain white fabric that you want to dye. This is an average estimate of proportion. So, if your fabric is small or big, increase or decrease the quantity in the same proportion.

First, soak your fabric in plain water so that it is totally wet. It lets it absorb the color well. Bring the turmeric water to a boil and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. Turn the heat off and add the fabric to the pot containing turmeric water. Use a wooden ladle or spatula to handle the fabric and to make sure that it is fully soaked and gets even color.

Now, simply let the fabric dry on a line in the shade. You will get a stunning vibrant yellow. You can also try a tie and dye.

5. Masks and Concoctions for Hair and Skin

Asians, especially Indians, women have been using it for centuries as a secret to their glowing skin. Applying turmeric powder topically, mostly in the form of face masks and facials, can actually give you a million-dollar skin without having to visit expensive salons. Treating acne, fighting signs of aging, correcting pigmentation, lightening stretch marks, soothing burns, healing wounds, removing facial hair, treating cracked heels, exfoliation, reducing oil secretion by sebaceous glands – you name it, turmeric can do all this and more for your skin.

Its antiseptic action treats infection of the skin, antibacterial action heals it, anti-inflammatory actions take care of problems like acne and pimples, and its antioxidant action imparts and unrivalled glow to your skin. It’s like an all-rounder remedy for getting great skin.

  • It also makes hair smooth and shiny

The topical application of turmeric powder can also add more charm to your crowning glory. A simple pre-shower application of olive oil with a pinch of turmeric powder can free you of fussy dandruff. If you suffer from dermal infections in the scalp, turmeric has the power to treat conditions like eczema, flaky and itchy scalp, dermatitis, etc. It can also find other bacterial and fungal infections of the scalp. This very property can also prevent and impede hair loss, and even foster hair regrowth.

Also, if you use a combination of other yellow colored herbs like saffron, calendula, or chamomile, boiled in water, and rinse your hair with it post shampoo, you can get glowing, silky and luminous hair.
